Ingredients
  

For the hot chocolate
  • 1.25 cups 1 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 0.25 cups 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 4 oz 4 oz dark chocolate Use good quality dark chocolate for best flavor.
  • 0.5 tsp 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 tsp 1/2 tsp instant coffee or espresso powder Instant coffee adds depth but can be skipped.
  • to taste Sugar to taste Add sugar gradually for desired sweetness.
  • as desired Whipped cream, for topping (optional)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a low heat setting on your stovetop, combine the whole milk and heavy cream. Warm the mixture gently to prevent scorching.
  2. Add the dark chocolate to the warm milk and cream, and whisk continuously until fully melted and smooth.
  3. Turn off the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and instant coffee, mixing until coffee is completely dissolved.
  4. Taste and add sugar gradually, stirring until it reaches your preferred sweetness.
  5. Pour into small cups and optionally top with whipped cream before serving.

Notes
