- Heat 2 cups of whole milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it begins to simmer around the edges, then remove it from heat.
- Whisk in 6-8 oz. of finely chopped dark chocolate and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Return the saucepan to medium-low heat and cook for another 30-60 seconds, whisking constantly to thicken slightly.
- Serve the hot chocolate in mugs, optionally topping with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Notes
If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat gently on the stove over low heat, adding a little more milk if necessary. For variations, you can add peppermint, orange zest, or cinnamon during the whisking process.
